Dental Bonding

Learn more about dental bonding for children below.
How Is Dental Bonding Performed?
Before getting started with cosmetic dental bonding, our local pediatric dentist will select a composite resin shade that closely matches your child’s natural tooth color. This helps the final result blend in seamlessly. Zooming out, the process typically includes the following steps:
- Shade selection: A shade guide is used to choose a resin that looks natural next to surrounding teeth.
- Tooth preparation: The tooth surface is gently roughened, and a conditioning liquid is applied to help the material adhere securely.
- Resin application: The tooth-colored composite is placed, shaped, and smoothed to achieve the desired appearance and fit.
- Curing: A special light hardens the resin in seconds, bonding it firmly to the tooth.
- Polishing: The bonded area is polished so it feels smooth and matches the shine of nearby teeth.
Bonding usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth and is often completed in a single visit to our Bethesda, MD, pediatric dental office. Anesthetic is rarely needed unless the bonding is being used for broken tooth repair.
How Will My Child Feel After Dental Bonding?
Most children feel comfortable right after dental bonding. Mild tooth sensitivity to temperature or pressure may occur, but it typically fades quickly. There is no downtime or healing period required. Your child can return to school, sports, and normal routines the same day.
We may recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for a short time to help protect the bonded area. With good brushing habits and regular dental visits, bonded teeth can remain attractive and functional for years.
