When Should My Child Have Dental X-Rays Taken?
Dental X-rays are not needed at every visit, but there are times when they play an important role in understanding what can’t be seen by the naked eye. Our local pediatric dentist may recommend X-rays outside of a standard teeth cleaning appointment if there is an area of concern or if we need a clearer picture of your child’s oral development.
X-rays may be taken to:
- Check whether there is enough space in the jaw for incoming adult teeth
- See if baby teeth are loosening and falling out at the right pace
- Detect early tooth decay that cannot be seen during a visual exam
- Identify impacted teeth or early wisdom tooth development
- Evaluate injuries after dental trauma
- Look for developmental concerns such as cysts or tumors
Because children’s mouths change quickly, pediatric dental X-rays help us monitor growth patterns and spot potential problems early. Catching issues at an early stage often means simpler treatment and better long-term outcomes. If X-rays are recommended, we will explain why they are needed and how they help guide your child’s care.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
Yes, modern dental X-rays are considered very safe for children. Today’s imaging technology uses extremely low levels of radiation, and the risk of negative side effects is very small. In fact, the amount of radiation from dental X-rays is comparable to what we are naturally exposed to in everyday life.
Your child’s safety is always our priority. During imaging, your child will wear a protective lead apron and a thyroid collar. These shields help protect sensitive areas like the abdomen and thyroid from unnecessary exposure.
Inside our Bethesda, MD, pediatric dental office, we also follow strict guidelines when it comes to how often X-rays are taken. They are only recommended when clinically necessary and based on your child’s age, oral health, and risk factors. Our goal is to gather helpful information while keeping exposure as low as possible.
