In-House Sedation
Our Bethesda, MD, pediatric dentist is proud to lead one of the few offices in the area that offers a full spectrum of in-house dental sedation options tailored to each child. From mild sedation to general anesthesia, our goal is always to ensure a comfortable, safe, and positive dental experience.
Importantly, we prioritize behavior management techniques to minimize the need for sedation, encouraging better oral hygiene practices and helping children overcome their fears and apprehensions about dental care.
What Are the Types of Dental Sedation?
Every child is different, and dental sedation allows our local pediatric dentist to customize care to your child’s needs, comfort level, and the type of treatment being performed. We offer several levels of sedation, all carefully selected with safety and effectiveness in mind.
Minimal Sedation (Laughing Gas)
Laughing gas is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. Your child remains awake, responsive, and able to follow instructions, but feels calmer and more relaxed. This option is often helpful for children who are nervous, have trouble sitting still, or need a little extra help getting through shorter or less complex procedures.Moderate Sedation (Oral Conscious Sedation)
Oral conscious sedation involves a prescribed medication taken before the appointment. It helps children feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, while still able to respond to verbal cues. This option can be beneficial for children with moderate anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or those who need longer appointments completed in fewer visits.Deep Sedation (IV Sedation)
IV dental sedation allows medication to be administered directly into the bloodstream, creating a deeper level of relaxation. Children are typically very sleepy and may not remember the procedure. This level of sedation is often recommended for children with severe dental anxiety, special healthcare needs, or those requiring more extensive treatment.General Anesthesia
General anesthesia places your child fully asleep, resulting in no pain or memory of the procedure, and is performed in a hospital setting. Dr. Shin is credentialed at two local hospitals to provide this level of care when necessary. This option may be recommended for complex cases, extensive dental needs, or when other forms of sedation are not appropriate.
When Is General Anesthesia Needed?
Administered in a hospital setting, general anesthesia is reserved for extensive dental work, children with special healthcare needs, or those who do not respond well to other levels of sedation.
Many parents wonder why this option is performed in a hospital and that’s because that setting provides the highest standard of care with a full medical team. It is essential for children who might have complex medical histories or need additional monitoring that cannot be as extensively provided in our Bethesda, MD, pediatric dental office. In these controlled environments, Dr. Shin, alongside an experienced anesthesiologist and our specialized pediatric dental team, will manage the procedure.
The safety of your child is paramount, which is why your child will be under the constant supervision of an anesthesiologist and a medical team trained in pediatric care. They will monitor your child’s vital signs rigorously throughout the procedure to manage the anesthesia safely and respond immediately to any changes in their condition.
Prior to the procedure, your child will be required to fast for several hours, as instructed by the anesthesiologist. The anesthesia itself is typically administered via an inhalation mask or through an IV, depending on what’s best for your child’s specific situation. While your child is asleep, we will perform the necessary dental treatments.
After the dental work is completed, your child will be taken to a recovery area where they will continue to be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia. Recovery times can vary, but children usually begin to wake up within an hour after the procedure ends. We’ll provide detailed after-care instructions to help manage recovery at home and are available for any follow-up questions or concerns.
Our Approach to Dental Sedation
Though we offer it, sedation isn’t always our first step. Our office places a strong emphasis on behavioral management techniques that help children feel safe, understood, and confident. From the moment families walk in, the environment feels more like a playroom than a clinic, with bright colors, fun distractions, and a team that truly gets kids.
Dr. Shin and our entire staff work closely together to determine the most appropriate approach for each child. We involve parents every step of the way, explaining options clearly and addressing concerns with honesty and care. By building trust and positive experiences early, we aim to reduce dental anxiety over time and lessen the future need for sedation altogether.
