How Do I Know If My Child’s Tooth Is Infected?
A tooth infection occurs once bacteria has reached the inner pulp of the tooth, often due to severe decay or injury. In some cases, children may clearly express discomfort. In others, the signs are more subtle. If you notice any of the symptoms below, a root canal procedure may be recommended to remove the infection and save the tooth.
Common signs of an infected tooth include:
- Ongoing tooth pain or sensitivity, especially to hot or cold
- Swelling of the gums near a specific tooth
- A pimple-like bump on the gums
- Discomfort when chewing or biting
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Signs of infection visible on dental X-rays
If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, a thorough exam and imaging will allow our local pediatric dentist to determine whether a baby root canal is needed.
Why Don’t You Just Pull Baby Teeth?
It’s a common question, and the answer depends on what’s best for your child’s oral health. While extractions are sometimes necessary, removing a baby tooth too early can lead to spacing issues, shifting teeth, and challenges with alignment later on. That’s why Dr. Shin may recommend root canal treatment for baby teeth instead of immediate removal.
When a baby tooth has an infection but is otherwise restorable, a root canal allows the tooth to remain in place until it’s ready to fall out naturally. Keeping baby teeth helps maintain proper spacing, supports normal chewing and speech, and reduces the need for additional dental appliances.
After treatment, the tooth is typically restored with a filling or crown to provide protection.
Dr. Shin carefully evaluates each case and will always explain why a root canal is the most appropriate option.
