What Are the Signs of a Severe Toothache?
Toothaches in kids can start small, but when pain becomes persistent or intense, it’s often a sign of a deeper problem that won’t resolve on its own. If your child continues to complain of tooth pain despite rest, home remedies, or over-the-counter pain medication, it’s important to have them seen by our local pediatric dentist as soon as possible. Severe toothaches can interfere with eating, sleeping, and everyday activities, and they may point to something hidden beneath the surface.
Common symptoms of a severe toothache include:
- Ongoing tooth pain that lasts more than a day or two
- Sharp, throbbing, or constant pain that worsens over time
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
- Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw near the affected tooth
- Red, inflamed, or bleeding gums
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Fever or general discomfort along with tooth pain
- A bad taste in the mouth or drainage near the tooth
If you notice one or more of these symptoms in your child, emergency pediatric dental care is needed to prevent the issue from worsening any further.
How Is a Toothache Professionally Treated?
When your child comes in for tooth pain relief, we’ll begin with a gentle visual examination and ask questions about your child’s symptoms, pain level, and recent dental history. Digital dental imaging may be used to get a clear view of what’s happening below the gumline and inside the tooth.
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the toothache. In some cases, a tooth-colored filling may be enough to repair decay. If the tooth’s inner pulp is affected, a pediatric root canal may be recommended to remove infection and save the tooth. For teeth that are badly damaged, a dental crown or extraction may be necessary. Our goal is always to relieve pain while protecting your child’s oral health and development.
For children who feel anxious or uncomfortable, in-house sedation is available to help them relax during the evaluation and treatment process.
